The Middle East is shocking again, this time with images from a blood-soaked ritual of young men slicing open their heads or other parts of their body in terrifying acts of self harm.
The holy Day of Ashura is a dramatic religious festival at which millions of young Muslim men around the world take part. It is held to mourn the death of the Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Husayn (in 680 AD), lasts 10 days and it is observed by both Sunni and Shia sects of the Muslim community.
The shocking pictures from this year’s ritual show the streets in Iraq soaked with blood by young men posing with knives, spears and chains.
Afghanistan, Bahrain Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and Pakistan mark the day of Ashura as a public holiday.
The annual ceremony is sadly targeted by Islamic extremists, and this year is no exception. A series of blasts targeting in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka killing at least one person and wounding dozens more.
