Greece also has stray dogs. But luckily there is a cafe in Mytilene, Lesbos, called Hott Spott, which opens its doors and lets stray dogs to sleep on their couches every night. They offer local stray dogs a warm place to sleep in. A picture showing dogs sleeping together on the cafferia’s sofas has gone viral on social media.
Antonis, an employee of the cafe said:
“In the city there are many dogs. When the bar closes each night, the dogs come and sleep here. We don’t have a problem. From July, every night there is a dog on the couch.”
While many people around the world abandon their pets because they cannot afford to take good care of them anymore, Greece seems to have a different approach when it comes to animal protection. Many other countries have shelters for abandoned pets and if nobody wants to adopt them in a certain period of time, they are put to sleep.
In Greece they do things differently, animals are microchipped, spayed, collared and vaccinated. Although they have strict laws about animal protection, they have a large number of stray dogs. And that is caused by the fact that they don’t have enough room in their houses. An Athen resident told LifeWithDogs.tv, “Here in Greece our homes are not large enough for all of us to house animals. That’s why we look after the street dogs. We feed them, pet them, and play with them. They are like our own pets, but they belong to everyone instead.”

“More than 700.000 refugees from Syria and other Middle East countries have entered Europe from this island this year and solidarity towards humans and animals was remarkable.” via
“In most European countries, they solve this problem [of stray dogs] with euthanasia. But Greek culture is against that. Our law is about rehabilitating the dogs. People here take care of them and love them. They are like everyone’s dog,” the head of Athen’s Stray Animal service explained.
